Throughout the day, I often get reminders of things I need to do. Meetings, planning my work trips, freelance things, all kinds of things. What I realized this past year is that I didn’t have any reminders of who I am, and I believed I missed out because of it. As I spend a lot of time in the office during they day, I decided to raid Cody’s toy chest and pulled out one of his little friends.
It’s just a little toy. A safari guy, with a frog. Cody will likely never miss it, and probably doesn’t even know it’s gone. But for me, it’s one of the most important things on my desk. A reminder, that I am Cody’s dad, Amy’s husband, a son to my mom and dad, and a member of God’s family.
More than that, it’s a reminder of the blessing that I have, and the immense responsibility that comes with that blessing. Psalms 127:3-5 says it best:
“Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.”
